Marijuana and the LGBTQ community go way back, but will the emergent legal cannabis market leave them behind. In spite of their long, parallel histories, the correlation between the fight for LGBTQ rights and the fight for national marijuana legalization get little attention. When I spoke with cannabis industry members about the obstacles and opportunities facing the LGBTQ community, I found a mix of optimism and cynicism—unsurprising for such a broad and diverse group like the LGBTQ community. Kyle Porter, president of CMW Media, argued that—broadly speaking—LGBTQ people may face some resistance in today’s cannabis industry. Another hope for national legalization is that the pernicious myths tying non-heterosexuality with recreational drug use continue to be challenged and fall away.
