The Return of Ulysses pulls you in with its charming characters


Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra conducted by David Fallis. The downsides of the production seemed to be from the Greek god characters, who each struggled to keep up with the mere mortals. This comic dynamic was a welcome change of pace from the turmoil between the often gloomy Ulysses and Penelope. The choreography was a particular delight, especially the rounds of carousel dancing, which were creatively reprised at the ovation, and even included conductor David Fallis jumping up onstage and joining in the fun. The staging by Gerard Gauci was relatively humble, but the Elgin Theatre suits it, especially with a busy opera like The Return of Ulysses.
