Tesla sales typically follow a pattern that exudes “stuffing” at the end of any quarter, and there was clearly some pull-ahead in sales into December in Holland because of the tax law change. But, no statistical or seasonal anomalies could have possibly prepared me for this morning’s BOVAG figure for Tesla sales in January in the Netherlands. The market has bestowed Musk and Tesla the term “sustainable,” but the fact is that Tesla’s sales performance in Europe in 2019 was simply not sustainable. Without the Dutch Treat, Tesla will struggle to match 2019’s sales figures in Europe in 2020. Plugging in any kind of normal value for Holland in December 2020 gets you to a year-on-year decline for Tesla sales in Europe in 2020.
