Toronto FC coach Greg Vanney is hoping that the sand-ridden turf at BMO Field will be better than it was when the Reds posted a 1-1 draw with Club Atletico Independiente de la Chorrera in CONCACAF Champions League play on Feb.26. As the temperatures increase, and they get to being above zero, then they can start growing the grass and make progress. “The grass is growing, it’s getting more dense, which in turn means that the sand is less prevalent,” Vanney added. I think they’re able to treat the field now. It’s trending in the right direction.”In April, the field will be strengthened by artificial fibres that will hold the surface together, protect the grass and reduce recovery time between events.
