The sheer joy of being back at a major tournament, the sheer pleasure of the sun shining on the return of the Open after two years, meant that the best seats in the house were in high demand around Royal St George’s yesterday. Away from the 1st tee and 18th green, the most sought-after vantage point was on the hillock that rises above the green on the par-three 6th, one of the finest viewing spots on the Open rota, affording not only an enviable view of that hole, but also a panorama of the whole patchwork quilt of a golf course, and beyond that across Sandwich Bay up the coast to Ramsgate.
