To D.H. or not to D.H.? All are being discussed with the players union, with reports saying that adding the D.H. to the National League could happen as soon as this year. Such a big step seems unlikely to happen so quickly, but the D.H. may well become a National League staple soon enough. National League owners would be wise to resist, not so much because of paying the D.H. salaries but because the return on investment is generally poor – the position is often filled with past-their-prime hitters who don’t produce much for the buck. With the way balls are flying out of the park everywhere these days, does the National League really need more offense?
