The Momo Challenge, a ghost story that swept across social media, shared by panicked parents, was a hoax that followed a recent, real YouTube controversy which highlighted the issue of child safety on the site. Matt Watson, a former YouTube creator, uncovered a series of predatory comments featured on videos of children on the streaming giant. And before that specific controversy, there were those incredibly unsettling ASMR videos, again, featuring young children. The Momo Challenge might be a paranoid fantasy, but the concept isn’t too far removed from the genuine dangers associated with unsupervised online activity. And if you have young children who like to binge-watch YouTube, I’d recommend switching to Netflix and Amazon Prime.
