Despite a market ripe with similar or even superior hitters, general manager Sandy Alderson recently asked the Philadelphia Phillies for two prospects in exchange for Jay Bruce, according to CSNPhilly’s Jim Salisbury. Bruce, 29, hit just .219 over 187 plate appearances as a Met last season, and was worth 0.9 fWAR overall in 2016. Wisely, the Phillies moved on, and signed outfielder Michael Saunders to a one-year, $9 million contract. Saunders was worth 0.5 fWAR more than Bruce in ‘16. If anything, the Mets' sudden faith in Bruce as a starter only upholds the organization’s questionable commitment to winning.
