The Met acquires two large-scale paintings by Canadian Cree artist Kent Monkman


The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Thursday it has acquired Ontario-based Cree artist Kent Monkman's mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People). Welcoming the Newcomers is one of two massive new works by Cree artist Kent Monkman, part of his installation mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People). It will be on display in the Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York until November 2020. (Metropolitan Museum of Art )The diptych is composed of two densely-detailed, large-scale paintings which sit at 3.36m-by-6.7m called Welcoming the Newcomers and Resurgence of the People. Both paintings debuted in December 2019 and will remain in the Great Hall until Nov. 16, 2020.
