Dan Reed's relentlessly direct, courageous documentary Leaving Neverland is changing that. On the eve of the HBO broadcast of Leaving Neverland on March 3 and 4, BBC Radio has, last week, made the decision not to air any more of Michael Jackson's music. The BBC's cultural bet is not that no one will ever play Michael Jackson. The previously glossed-over narrative of his personal history and behavior, as told in Leaving Neverland, will be attached to the music. What the BBC is telling us with its action is, these narratives should affect the general understanding of Michael Jackson, and to the extent that they have anything to do with it, they will.
