The Latest: Lebanese politician says strikes warned Israel

BEIRUT — The Latest on developments in Syria (all times local):5:15 p.m.A senior Lebanese politician and close ally of Syria and Iran says this week’s retaliation to repeated Israeli airstrikes in Syria was a “very strong warning” to Israel. Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri says this time the Syrian retaliation was in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights but next time it will be in Israel proper. Berri, a powerful longtime politician allied with Hezbollah, said the Syrian response has achieved a “balance of terror” with Israel. Israel has warned it will not tolerate its archenemy Iran establishing a military presence on its doorstep. Israel says the strikes were retaliation for an Iranian rocket barrage on its positions in the Golan Heights and has called on the U.N. Security Council and secretary-general to immediately condemn Iran’s attack.
