The Late Henry Moss plays into troubling stereotypes

The Late Henry MossBy Sam Shepard, directed by Scott Walker. Until January 20 at the Assembly Theatre, 1479 Queen St. W. Unit102actors.com This is one of the last full-length plays by the legendary American writer Sam Shepard, who passed away last year. He directed its 2000 world premiere in San Francisco, which featured a starry cast led by Sean Penn and Nick Nolte as the battling brothers Ray and Earl. A year later, Joseph Chaikin directed the play in New York with Ethan Hawke and Arliss Howard as the brothers. He tracks down a taxi driver (the funny, intense Michael Eisner) who accompanied Henry on a fishing trip and whom Earl also employs to retrace Henry’s last great drinking binge.
