South Auckland's diabetes epidemic is the subject of a new study released in The Lancet medical journal. The research looked at the health records of more than 45,000 people with type 2 diabetes in south Auckland over a 25-year period. According to the Ministry of Health there are over 250,000 people in New Zealand who have been diagnosed with diabetes (mostly type 2) which is more common among Māori, Pacific and South Asian people. According to the Ministry of Health diabetes is the country's biggest and fastest growing health condition and South Auckland has the highest number of people diagnosed with it in New Zealand. Dominico Zapata/Stuff National Urban Māori Authority (NUMA) chairwoman Tureiti Moxon says a new study on south Auckland's diabetes epidemic highlights the need for greater self-determination for Māori in healthcare.
