Today is the day, thanks to time zone magic, that Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout opens in China. It has outgrossed the $195m cume of Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation and looks set to give Brad Bird’s Ghost Protocol ($209m in 2011) and John Woo’s Mission: Impossible II ($215m in 2000) a run for their unadjusted money. There’s a running joke in Mission: Impossible II over the lengths to which Hunt will go to not hurt or kill a security guard. The popularity of the Mission: Impossible franchise is a testament to the power of the true-blue hero. Just like Chris Evans’ Captain America and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Hunt’s determination to not wallow in the mud for the proverbial greater good is what makes him a greater good.
