While Matz had an up-and-down start to his season, he has been lights out since the all-star break. With seven-plus dominant innings in Friday night’s 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, Matz lowered his ERA in the second half to 2.91. More important, the victory ensured the Jays kept pace with the Boston Red Sox for the second wild-card spot. The Jays remained one game back of the Red Sox, who picked up a 4-2 win over the Washington Nationals. If the Jays sweep the Orioles this weekend, they might have a chance at keeping their season alive.
