Also, MEA economies with poorer regulations experience higher illicit trade as they have weaker regulatory frameworks to combat illicit networks. Illicit alcohol trade is carried out at various rendezvous points in the desert, where the modus operandi is to meet suppliers and fill empty petrol cans with alcohol. Illicit trade and organised crime activity are believed to be closely linked to the country’s increased violence and conflict over the past decade. Global governments, businesses and national associations are constantly engaged in trying to curb illicit trade.
