In a waiting room in a private hospital two grand figures in South African politics are now elderly outpatients. One is the former president Jacob Zuma, the other is Ronnie Kasrils, the ANC official and veteran Communist, who once ran the country’s intelligence service. In Gail Louw’s play they occupy opposite sides of the moral compass. Zuma is the amiable populist, who believes his earlier years of hardship and imprisonment have earned him the right to help himself to the country’s riches. Kasrils may be willing to joke about the good-old days and play a friendly game of chess, yet ultimately he sees his friend…
