Rabbi Leder was marveling at the Getty Museum’s latest acquisition, The 13th Century Rothschild Pentateuch (which is also the first Hebrew manuscript in the Getty’s collection). I asked to bring Rabbi Leder as my own Hebrew manuscript expert. “I felt giddy,” Rabbi Leder later told me. The Rothschild manuscript includes the five books of Moses, as well as the texts of such scrolls as the book of Esther. Take a look at the Rothschild Pentateuch and see that in 1296 a whole civilization was portable in one book.
