2018 was a banner year for discoveries about our species's evolution and extinct relatives like the Neanderthals. In February we finally obtained hard evidence that Neanderthals made cave art, as prehistoric humans did. But they are about on a par with the art humans were producing at the same time. In April archaeologists described a human finger bone from the Saudi Arabian desert, which is at least 85,000 years old.
