The military machine that makes the United States a global force yields sacrifices that are less cinematic, and Memorial Day typically focuses on battlefield heroes and combat deaths. His father wonders if he should be honored on Memorial Day, as he didn’t die in combat. As Americans honor the fallen this Memorial Day, it’s time to also acknowledge those who died serving their country in other ways, including by suicide.
