Your editorial “Eric Holder’s Judicial Gerrymanders” (July 8) overlooks Mr. Holder’s recent success in Virginia. When Virginia’s state legislative districts were drawn in 2011, they were passed with bipartisan majorities, including with the support of African-American members. Redistricting in Virginia, like in other Southern states, is subject to the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, which requires U.S. Justice Department approval of district maps to ensure there is no racial gerrymandering. Virginia received this approval from the Justice Department in 2011, headed by then-Attorney General Eric Holder.
