I use the term “software-defined systems” to refer to any military systems whose performance depend in great part on software that can easily be updated in the field. Software-defined systems, especially those driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, make it possible to alter the parameters of military systems in the field literally at the touch of a download button. I use “modular systems” as shorthand for systems built from modular components that can easily be swapped in the field without specialized infrastructure.
