Throughout the 25 years of her writing life, Dani Shapiro, a prolific novelist and memoirist, has been obsessed with the themes of family and secrecy. Until recently, she says, “I couldn’t have told you why.”Then her husband, interested in learning more about his own ancestry, decided to take a home DNA test and bought Ms. Shapiro a kit too. Following the instructions, Ms. Shapiro spit in a tube and sent the company the kit. She didn’t give the test any further thought until much later, when the results came back.
