Today was the deadline the Trump administration had set for finishing NAFTA negotiations with Canada. This means a NAFTA 2.0 will not be both properly notified and signed by the outgoing Mexican administration. The notification the Trump administration ultimately sent to Congress today was exceedingly vague; it offered almost no detail beyond claims of great progress. That TPP deal, which President Trump killed, was also a reminder that it was eminently feasible to renegotiate NAFTA with both Canada and Mexico – President Obama just did so on most of the same issues. President Trump either badly misunderstands or does not care about the economic impact of his trade dealings.
