The Fall of the American Empire a stylish cash conundrum from Quebec

Opening this Friday at the Varsity & VIP and Canada Square cinemas is the Quebec film The Fall of the American Empire, which Toronto filmgoers had a chance to see last fall at TIFF. Here’s a quick review from that time, courtesy of the Star’s Bruce DeMara, who gave it three stars:“Venerable Quebecois director Denys Arcand weaves a sinuous and stylish tale about a delivery driver with a degree in philosophy, and not much else going for him, who gets the windfall of a lifetime from a botched robbery, and turns to an ex-con (Arcand stalward Remy Girard) fresh out of prison and a high-priced escort in order to keep it. As usual with Arcand’s films, big ideas abound about luck, fate and the evils of capitalism. Alexandre Landry is winning as protagonist Pierre-Paul, a man out of his depth with the cops hot on his heels.”
