Domestic aluminum production has dropped to about a third, with three-quarters of our aluminum smelters closing since the peak. Global steel production is now at an historic high of 1.6 billion tons a year. Solar and Wind energy take more steel than any other energy source. Solar needs 1,600 tons of steel per MW, wind energy needs over 400 tons of steel, while gas and nuclear need only 4 and 40 tons, respectively. The average high-voltage transmission tower includes about 30 tons of steel and transmission wire contains about a ton of steel per mile.
