But here’s the bad news: Such leaders may shy away from a tough decision if they think it will hurt their popularity. In a recent study published in the Journal of Personality in Social Psychology, Charleen Case, an assistant professor of management and organizations at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, tried to determine when interest in social approval might drive a leader to make poor decisions.
