The Cure For Health Care Is Competition

Over the last few months, fierce debate regarding the future of health care has created more questions than answers for millions of Americans. Despite what seems like endless discussion over the future of health care, politicians and the public have yet to diagnose the crucial problem within our health care system: it is completely devoid of real, market-based competition – the type of competition that allows the highest-value providers to win and builds long-term doctor-patient relationships. This is particularly troubling when considering that health care spending accounts for a substantial portion of the U.S. economy. Total health care expenditures were projected to have been nearly $3.4 trillion in 2016, and over 80% of adults reported that they had contact with a health care professional in the past year. With Americans spending so much on health care, the lack of transparency and competition in the health care system is detrimental to the individuals who consume health care, the businesses that sponsor health insurance, and those doctors who outperform and deliver the greatest value.
