The Christmas Ad That Rode Off With 9% Of Pelotons Share Value

A Peloton Cycle Inc. in the gym area of the Dwight Capital LLC office in New York City. But for exercise company Peloton this is not the case after their Christmas adverts were widely mocked as being “sexist” and resembling something from “dystopian” TV show Black Mirror by consumers. The ad, which has been viewed more than 2 million times on YouTube, sees a woman receive an exercise bike for Christmas from her husband. Earlier this year the company raised $1.16 billion in an IPO that valued the company at $8 billion, which has now risen to $9.39 billion, despite the drop in share value over recent days. It’s going to be interesting to track the impact of the Christmas ad, and I wonder if the words from the ad might end up prophetic for the company: “A year ago, I didn’t realise how much this would change me.”
