GettyThe Cardinals added to the growing number of MLB contract extensions by extending Matt Carpenter for two more seasons at $39 million, the team announced on Wednesday afternoon. Carpenter’s contract with St. Louis was due to expire at the end of this season, though there was a team option for 2020 at $18.5 million. If not, he’ll get a $2 million buyout after 2021, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Cardinals drafted him in 2009, and this new contract probably ensures that he will remain in St. Louis for the entirety of his career. Especially in light of contract extensions to Eloy Jimenez in Chicago and Ronald Acuña, Jr. in Atlanta -- both of whom are more than a decade younger than Carpenter -- the Cardinals extending Carpenter can look strange.
