The national women’s team has dominated the talk for years when it comes to Canada’s success on the international soccer scene. It continued in 2015, when Canada hosted the Women’s World Cup, and 2016 with another bronze medal at the Rio Olympics. Coach John Herdman’s second year with the men’s program — after nearly seven on the women’s side — saw the burgeoning squad go 6-3-0. Herdman compares the challenge to the one he faced when he took over the women’s program in 2011, after a dismal World Cup finish under coach Carolina Morace. In the year to come, the men’s program plans to continue to develop young talent, a core for sustained success in the international game.
