R. Laurence Moore and Isaac Kramnick are the authors of “Godless Citizens in a Godly Republic: Atheism in American Public Life.”The Girl Scouts sued the Boy Scouts last month in federal court. When the Boy Scouts of America announced their intention to rename themselves the Scouts as part of their effort to attract girl members, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America saw their trademark infringed. Even as the number of nonbelievers grows steadily in the United States, the Boy Scouts still require a religious oath. Opening the Boy Scouts to gay, transgender, and girl members and now even to humanists will have its founder, Robert Baden-Powell, turning over in his grave, however the Girl Scout suit works out. Did he not write in the first Boy Scout handbook in 1908, “No man is much good unless he believes in God and obeys His will”?
