The 2016 Man Booker prize shortlist was announced this week. The winner will be revealed on October 25; here are the verdicts of our reviewers on the six contenders. The Sellout by Paul BeattyA satire on American race relations. The main character, an African-American, reintroduces segregation into his LA neighbourhood, which proves to be a great success. The exhausting comedy and in-jokes of the book were not to our reviewer’s taste: “The Sellout is the kind of novel designed to be deconstructed in a university classroom rather than enjoyed by a mere reader,” said Clive Davis.
