The Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts had a major moment during the Gilded Age when Vanderbilts and Morgans built palatial estates there, known as Berkshire cottages. Now, after decades of decline during which many grand cottages were converted into ashrams, summer camps, spas and nursing homes, the Berkshires seem ready for a fresh turn in the spotlight as a new breed of homeowners snatch up historic homes and restore them as weekend retreats and primary residences.
