Even when this England team are good, trouble is never too far away. In making 403 in the first innings at Perth, they were broadly very good. A record partnership of 237 between Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow, centurions both, had eased them away from the troubled times of 131 for four. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes were the most wasteful, respectively wafting and whacking when Bairstow still had plenty of batting left in him. In the first innings in Brisbane, they lost four vital wickets for 24 to throw away a strong position.
