A strange space signal discovered by Russian astronomers who believed it came from a star 94 light years away, was actually caused by terrestrial interference rather than by aliens, the Russian Academy of Sciences announced Wednesday. “On August 30, 2016 there appeared a number of reports on possible detection of a radio signal associated with the activity of an extraterrestrial civilization,” RAS spokesperson Yulia Sotnikova explained in a press release. “We spent two nights looking for it…We couldn’t find the signal, and now the Russian Academy of Science says it’s a military satellite,” he said. It is unclear whether the Director of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Alexander Ipatov actually said that the 2015 signal came from a military satellite. Because the signal was discovered in May, 2015, and it was only observed once despite 39 separate tries, Shostak says it is noteworthy that the Russian astronomers made no initial attempts to confirm the discovery.
