Facing heavy losses in Ukraine, Russia is offering high salaries and bonuses to entice new recruits. Now the mounting death payments are providing an injection of wealth into some of Russia’s poorest areas in return for a steady stream of soldiers for the war effort. Since the start of the war, Russia has suffered over 600,000 casualties, including killed and wounded, according to Western estimates. In Russia’s hinterland, though, the war payouts make a big difference.
