Despite its long history, PECO has for years been universally regarded as one of the most horrible companies in the Philippines. Trading one oligarch for anotherA franchise renewal bill eventually did make its way to the Senate, but days after the franchise expired on Jan. 19, 2019, the Senate rejected it. This time, the Mandaluyong court made a decisive ruling, and on July 1, 2019 voided MEPC’s franchise on the grounds it infringed on PECO’s right to due process. Anyone with a modicum of legal knowledge would recognize that as a gross overreach on the part of a local court. MEPC did, too, promptly petitioning the Supreme Court to issue an injunction against the Mandaluyong RTC’s ruling.
