The Form Four candidates at Karigini Secondary School drank the ethanol from the laboratory. Confirming the tragic incident, Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zacchaeus Ngeno said 11 others, including four girls and seven boys, were receiving treatment at Chuka County Referral Hospital. Tharaka Nithi County Nursing Officer Kenneth Micheni said the 11 were in stable condition but experiencing mild symptoms. Tharaka Nithi, Director of Education Bridget Wambua, urged the school management to be vigilant, describing the incident as unfortunate. Wambua also appealed to parents of day school students to ensure their children, especially candidates, do not engage in various vices as they sit for the national examination.
