Initial box office reports indicate that the $20 million budgeted actioner pulled in 69.5 crore rupees (USD 10.9 million) across India, and another 36.5 crore ($5.7 million) overseas, for a 106 crore / $16.6 million debut frame. Nearly half of Vivegam’s worldwide total came from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which accounted for 48 crore ($7.5 million) in revenue. In the neighboring South Indian state of Kerala, on the other hand, mixed reviews contributed to a rather tepid 1.75 crore opening day and 3.6 crore ($564,000) 4-day weekend. In the United States, for instance, Vivegam scored a so-so $455,000 opening weekend, and in the U.K. and Australia it also picked up moderate grosses of US $138,000 and $146,000, respectively. Given that those are three big territories for Indian films, it’s unclear where the other $4.96 million came from.
