Texas Senate committee debates, does not vote, on transgender college sports bill

The NCAA allows transgender athletes to compete according to their gender identity provided they pass certain hormone benchmarks. The college sports governing body had previously reiterated its support in the face of similar bills to exclude transgender athletes from competing according to their gender identity. A January 2022 report by Outsports tracked 34 openly transgender athletes who have competed in collegiate sports nationwide. The committee did not invite any transgender athletes to give their testimony Monday. Other opponents included representatives from the LGBTQ rights group Equality Texas, the Transgender Education Network of Texas and El Paso County Commissioner David Stout.
