Britain’s biggest supermarket chain has notified HM Revenue & Customs and Usdaw, the shopworkers’ union, about the problems. Tesco said that the errors were identified after the implementation of a new payroll system and were because voluntary contributions made by some colleagues towards benefits, such as pensions, childcare vouchers and cycle to work schemes, resulted in their pay falling below the national minimum wage. Its payroll review involved checking payments for the last six years, but the problems could go back further.
