Terror attack needed herculean lawmaking response

OPINION: Over the last two weeks, my political life has been pre-occupied with Parliament's initial response to the Christchurch terror attack of March 15. I had the responsibility of representing New Zealand First during the debates on the Arms Amendment Act legislation in the House and in Select Committee. To have a law passed banning Military Style Semi-Automatic (MSSA) weapons in just 10 days was a herculean task for all concerned. This ensured that .22 semi-automatic rimfire rifles with up to 10 shot magazine capacity and 5 shot semi-automatic shotguns were unaffected by the ban. The events in Christchurch were extraordinary and so must be our response.
