In an age of splintered attention and multi-everything-all-at-once, why should anyone, even a tennis fan, have to limit himself to one distraction at a time? Here was Jake Snorsky, for instance, standing atop his seat far above a cluster of courts at the United States Open the other day, able to watch seven potentially interesting things at once. It was a feast of tennis, almost too much to take in at once, and it was the perfect thing. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center has moved courts around, moved seats up, installed a cunning network of raised walkways and opened up sightlines everywhere. Even the lowest-ranked players at the tournament are far better, obviously, than anyone you would see at home, and it is thrilling to watch them there so close.
