An Auckland tenant has taken his landlord to the Tenancy Tribunal, seeking to enforce what he said was a 10-year fixed-term agreement. Johnson and landlords Denis and Jivan Naran told the tribunal they had a good relationship until the landlords sought to raise the rent this year. When he signed up, he told the landlord he wanted somewhere long-term and said Naran told him that if he met his obligations, he could stay 10 years. The landlords agreed that Johnson had been told he could stay long-term but said an exact term was not settled on. "I therefore find this was not a fixed-term tenancy but a periodic tenancy, which could be determined by notice."
