It’s been 10 long years since maverick adventurer Steve Fossett perished in a plane crash in California’s Sierra Nevada range. On his fateful day in 2007, Fossett took off in a single-engine plane from a private airstrip near Smith Valley, NV. He is best known for his aviation prowess, being first to solo the world nonstop in a balloon (2002) and in an airplane (2005). SF: I sailed with my crew around the world in 58 days, nine hours, which took six days off the prior world record. When I started, the longest balloon flight was just over 5,000 miles, and the longest duration was just six days.
