Patients and staff were pepper-sprayed by a teenager who overpowered a police officer and went on a rampage around a hospital emergency department. The 17-year-old was sedated in Auckland's Middlemore Hospital but woke suddenly, assaulted the officer guarding him and grabbed his spray canister. Hospital staff sedated him for his own and others' safety. Police are now reviewing procedures in hospital custody cases and while police and the hospital say this was an unusual case, it shows the constant threats medical staff and officers face, they say. Dr Thornton said the hospital was not carrying out its own investigation because it was "very apparent" what had happened.
