Team USA coaches will decide in Rio if Katie Ledecky can take a run at history

Katie Ledecky, second from right, is a shoo-in for the 4x200-meter relay team in Rio next month, along with (from left) Allison Schmitt, Leah Smith and Missy Franklin. Sometimes, there is no choice — as in 2008, when Jessica Hardy was removed from the U.S. Olympic team following a positive drug test. Sweden, the Netherlands and Canada also boast formidable quartets of 100 free sprinters. Simone Manuel, 19, will compete in her second Olympic trials this summer in Omaha, specializing in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay. Ledecky herself cannot solve that problem, and she may never get the chance to try in Rio.
