Team Canada: Olympic success has been rare in team sports, but that could change in Rio

In 2016 in Rio De Janeiro, Canada will field teams in at least five events, including women’s soccer, women’s basketball, men’s volleyball, men’s field hockey and women’s rugby sevens. It’s not inconceivable that Canada could win three medals, with contending squads in basketball and rugby sevens and an outside shot in soccer. “Getting an opportunity to play a team that is lower ranked, the expectations change, the pressure changes, but it’s a team that Canada can beat on any given day. Canada plays Australia on Aug. 3 in Sao Paulo, then takes on Zimbabwe on Aug. 6 before facing Germany on Aug. 9. It’s not difficult to dash off the list of Canadian medal winners in team sports at the Olympics over the last 80 years.
