Children who lacked empathy when communicating with adults and other children was becoming more common, McKenzie said. McKenzie has just published a revised version of her book which helps children articulate clearly. A motivator for McKenzie to publish the book was that children were struggling with communication and New Zealand literacy levels were dropping as a result. McKenzie felt it was important for children to have clear communication skills because the barriers for success go up without being able to articulate clearly.
